Senior Care

Providing quality preventative care to our senior pets is one of our main goals at Westbury Animal Hospital. "Senior" pets are those dogs that are over 7 years of age and cats that are over 9 years of age.

We at Westbury Animal Hospital recommend that all "Senior" pets have a physical exam performed every 6 months. During the physical exam our veterinarians are able to detect changes in your pets heart, eyes, ears, and joints. We also recommend that bloodwork be performed on your senior pet at least once a year.

A chemistry profile allows our veterinarians to evaluate your pet's kidneys, liver, and thyroid function. When certain diseases, such as kidney disease, are detected early they can be controlled with such things as diet, medication, and frequent check ups.

A complete blood count (CBC) allows our veterinarians to evaluate your pet's red blood cells and white blood cells. With this valuable information our veterinarians can determine if your pet has any source of infections that may not be obvious to us on a daily basis.

The last piece of information, but an invaluable piece, we recommend in our senior care is a urine analysis. Evaluating our pet's urine on a regular basis helps our veterinarians to detect kidney disease much earlier.

Early detection is the key to guarantying your pet a long and healthy life.
