Animal Care Technician

Westbury Animal Hospital, Inc. (WAH) has been caring for pets since 1957. We are proud to be an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) certified hospital.  Westbury Animal Hospital has a well deserved reputation of providing top quality medical care and excellent client service. We, as a team, all strive each day to preserve this reputation. We offer many services to our clients and patients.  Among these are: 24-hour patient care, ultrasound, radiology, a surgical facility, electrocardiography, endoscopy, intensive care, dentistry, in-house laboratory, pharmacy, prescription diets, boarding, emergency service at all times, and after hours patient admittance and release. Westbury Animal Hospital, Inc. is a small business dedicated to the care and well-being of our clients’ pets.  We work closely with the Houston S.P.C.A., CAP, and other humane organizations to aid in the welfare of animals.  Our doctors have donated their time and services to these organizations as well as city spay and neuter clinics.

Summary of Job Duties and Essential Functions:

    Animal Caretakers are responsible for the day-to-day care of patients and boarders. This includes feeding, watering, cleaning, walking, bathing, and monitoring the well being of dogs, cats and, occasionally, other companion animals. Animal Caretakers must be able to lift and/or move heavy pets and objects, administer medications, and monitor pets for signs of distress or disease. Animal Caretakers must possess the willingness to learn and the desire to provide gentle, compassionate care for boarded and hospitalized pets. Kennel experience is not always a prerequisite for this position.

    General Knowledge 

  • Know the range of services the practice provides and the species it treats.
  • Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.
  • Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly.


Job Tasks 

  • Must be reliable and prepared to work by the start of each scheduled shift.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance while at work, including clean and pressed uniforms or clothes.
  • Must maintain an even, friendly demeanor while on the job. Perform job tasks efficiently without rushing.
  • Be able to handle stress and pressure with poise and tact.
  • Show respect for clients, team members, and animals (alive or deceased) at all times.
  • Maintain a list of tasks and engage in productive work during slow periods.
  • Assist other employees as needed. Avoid waiting for coworkers to ask for assistance.
  • Maintain constant vigilance regarding open doorways that could allow pets to escape from the facility.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding clients and patients for whom the practice provides veterinary services.
  • Be prepared to handle any pet or facility emergency that may arise, including dog or cat fights, choking or strangulating animals, and facility fire or weather-related emergencies. Follow contingency plans.
  • Follow established facility procedures to ensure the security of patients, boarders, and the building.


  • Must be 17 years or older to apply.
  • Previous work experience preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate reliability either through job-related references or school-related references.
  • Working Conditions 

  • Have the physical strength and ability to stand for an entire shift when needed, and be able to lift, push and pull, pets and objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance, handle repetitive up-and-down or back-and-forth motions, and work while bending. Assist in lifting patients weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Associate is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • have physical mobility and dexterity to frequently stand, walk  bend, push, twist, kneel, climb, squat, stoop, and reach overhead
  • Considerable mental/visual concentration, coordinating manual dexterity with mental/visual attention, requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderately high.
  • Must wear closed-toe shoes, gloves, and other protective items as required.
  • A consistent presence at work is required.
  • Must pass company required drug screen.
